The Order's Confirmation

The Franciscan order was first officially recognized by Pope Innocent III in 1210. Also called the "Lesser Brothers" or the "Friars Minor", the members of the original order gave up worldly possessions and preached Christ's mission in the streets. This painting by Giotto shows St. Francis and the Order gathered around the feet of the Pope following the confirmation. In Giotto's cutting edge and characteristic style you can see the motion in the order's members as they bow leaning almost impossibly forward on their knees.
