Portrait of St. Francis of Assisi
Here St. Francis is depicted by Domenico Di Michelino with the characteristically bare feet and long nondescript robes of a begar. St. Francis was not born into poverty, he chose to give up his inherited wealth and live a life of poverty to follow Jesus' example of how to live a "good" life. Would you give up the material wealth you posses for a more full life?

More Information on the life of St. Francis
St. Francis of Assisi was the son of a cloth merchant who was educated young. Disgruntled with the current economic advances, St. Francis started the Franciscan order after a series of events renouncing his inheritance and gaining respect from his followers and many others. The Franciscan Order founded by St. Francis still exists today although fractured over the centuries. The original “Regula” requires Franciscans to renounce material wealth and vow to a “life of poverty unambiguously”. In his last writing, St. Francis claimed “absolute personal and corporate poverty was the essential lifestyle”. St. Francis strived to continue Christ's work, in the same fashion as Jesus himself, to help the poor and starving.
